Who can audition for PPHO?

Students who participate in their school orchestra or band program and meet the eligibility requirements outlined in the Student Guide are encouraged to audition.

How do I register?

Complete the online registration form before submitting your audition. Your registration confirms your commitment to participate if selected.

Do I need my music teacher's permission to participate?

Yes. All auditions are submitted through your school music director, who will guide you through the process.

Where do I find the audition music?

Visit the Audition Music page and download the for your ensemble and instrument.

Can I record my audition at home with my phone?

Yes. A quiet room and a phone, tablet, or computer with a built-in microphone are all you need.

Can high school students submit their All-State recording instead of a separate PPHO audition?

YES - High school string students can submit their prepared All-State audition in place of the PPHO audition music. High school band students will submit their All-State audition recording - there is no specific PPHO audition for band students.

Do I need professional recording equipment?

No. A clear recording made in a quiet room is perfectly acceptable.

Can I record my audition more than once?

Yes. Choose your best performance before submitting it to your music director.

Should I say my name in the recording?

No. Do not announce your name before beginning your audition recording, and do not speak during the remainder of your recording.

What file format should I submit?

Your audition should be submitted as an MP3 file.

How do I submit my audition?

Save your MP3 recording and give it to your school music director. Your director will submit your audition to PPHO.

Can I upload my audition directly to PPHO?

No. All audition recordings are submitted by school music directors.

When is my audition due?

Your music director may set an earlier deadline than the published PPHO deadline. Submit your recording to your teacher by the deadline they provide.

What if my upload doesn't go through, or I don't get a confirmation?

How much does it cost to participate?

Students selected for PPHO pay a $50 participation fee.

Can I miss a rehearsal?

Students are expected to attend every rehearsal and the concert. Because rehearsal time is limited, absences should only occur in cases of illness or emergency. Uncommunicated absences or absences for other reasons will be grounds for dismissal from the ensemble.

What should I bring to rehearsal?

Bring your instrument, music, pencil, and any other materials requested by your music director or PPHO staff.

Do I need to practice outside of rehearsals?

Yes. Students are expected to practice independently between rehearsals so everyone arrives prepared.

Can a student miss a rehearsal?

Students are expected to attend every rehearsal and the performance. Because rehearsal time is limited, absences should occur only because of illness or emergency. Emergency absences should be communicated to the school music director.
