How to Record Your Audition
Follow these simple steps to create a clear, successful audition recording.
Before Recording
Practice until you can perform the music confidently
Tune your instrument carefully
Find a quiet room with minimal background noise
Place your music on a stand where it is easy to read
Ask someone to help with starting and stopping the recording, if needed
Recording Setup
Recording Device
Use a phone, tablet, computer, or digital recorder with a built-in microphone.
No special recording equipment is required.
Choose the device that gives you the clearest sound.
Recording Environment
Record in a quiet room with as little background noise as possible.
Turn off televisions, music, fans, and other distractions.
Ask family members to avoid talking or walking through the room while you're recording.
Microphone Placement
Place your recording device about 6–10 feet from you and your instrument.
Set the device on a stable surface.
Before recording your audition, make a short test recording to ensure your instrument can be heard clearly without sounding distorted.

Start your recording.
Do NOT say your name.

Record your audition in the order given.
Follow the audition page order. Try to maintain a steady tempo and continue playing even if you make a small mistake.

Finish the recording.
After your last note, wait two or three seconds before stopping the recording.
This prevents the ending from being accidentally cut off.
During Your Recording

Listen to your completed recording before submitting it.
Avoid

Recording with televisions or conversations in the background.

Holding the phone or device while playing.

Sitting too close to the microphone, which can cause distorted sound.

Recording in a room with an echo or excessive reverberation.

Cutting off the beginning or ending of the recording.

Waiting until the last minute to record your audition.
Submitting your Audition
Students should NOT upload recordings directly to PPHO.
Instead:

Save your recording.

Give the MP3 file to your school music director.

Your director will submit it to PPHO.
Can I record more than once?
Yes. Choose your best performance before submitting it.
Can I record at home?
Absolutely.
What if I don't have a quiet place?
Ask your music director if you may record at school.
What if my recording isn't an MP3?
Most recordings can be converted to MP3 using free software or online tools. Ask your music director if you need assistance.
Do I have to record everything at once?
No, you can record each section separately and put the recordings into one file.
*Do not edit or modify the recordings in any way.
Remember
The audition committee is evaluating your musical performance—not the quality of your recording equipment.
A clear recording made on a phone or tablet in a quiet room is perfectly acceptable.
